What is Happening:
The urban forest in which Canberra is now embedded is a globally-unique legacy of those who envisaged, designed and created our city and its form. Lindsay Pryor’s work in the 1940s and 1950s both consolidated and extended that which the Griffins and Charles Weston began 30 years before, and created much of the urban forested form today’s Canberrans enjoy and value. In this lecture, Peter Kanowski will reflect on what we have learnt from Lindsay Pryor’s work in Canberra and the ACT – his breadth of knowledge, and the decades of experimentation and innovation that characterised his work – as we manage the present and shape the future of one of Canberra’s defining and greatest assets.
Peter Kanowski is Professor of Forestry at ANU. Since the 2003 Canberra bushfires, he has worked closely with the ACT Government and other stakeholders and community members in addressing the challenges and opportunities of sustaining and renewing Canberra’s urban and peri-urban forests.
