Sustainable House Day started in 2001 as an initiative of the Australian Solar Energy Society (AuSES).
Sustainable House Day gives people the chance to get a real-life look inside houses that have been designed, built or fitted out with sustainability in mind and talk to owners. Home viewers at this year’s event will be able to see benefits such as solar, ventilation, water harvesting and recycling, shading, thermal mass (materials that absorb and release heat), glazing and window treatments.
The aim of Sustainable House Day 2010 is to provide an enjoyable, informative day that contributes to local community awareness of sustainable living.
The day is conducted on an open house basis right across Australia, similar in structure to the traditional real estate sales open day, but in this case, the emphasis is strictly on education and the principles of healthy sustainable living and house design. In the ACT region, the local chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects is hosting this year’s event.
To see which houses and buildings in the Canberra region will be open to the public on 12 September 2010 go to website http://www.sustainablehouseday.com/australian-capital-territory.php
