What is Happening:
Global sea levels are rising as coastal development spreads. Planned retreat from the sea behind natural ecological defences may be a sustainable option.
Dr Nick Abel will apply a general framework for exploring this option to a case study of South East Queensland. He will conclude that the retreat option is disappearing
To maintain the retreat option, land for colonisation by coastal ecosystems could be set aside, or houses built on condition they are removed when the sea reaches a pre-specified height.
In this seminar Dr Abel will discuss the institutional changes that would be needed to implement the retreat option, and the principles that would be needed to underpin them.
Dr Nick Abel is a principal research scientist with CSIRO Sustainable Ecosystems.
