New Government Website to Help You Decide About Electricity and Gas Offers

The Australian Government has set up a new Energy Made Easy website to help consumers make an informed choice about electricity and gas offers.

The website has two key tools:

  • Compare Energy Offers in Your Area – as a residential or small business customer you can compare all electricity and gas retailers in your area to see if you are on the best energy offer for your needs.
  • Understand and Compare Your Energy Usage – understand your electricity usage and compare it against other households in your area. This can help you find ways to be more energy efficient.

For example, if you go to Understand and Compare Your Energy Usage and enter the 2600 postcode for Canberra, Energy Made Easy tells you that the average two-person household in Canberra uses 25-kilowatt hours of electricity per day in winter, and that winter is the most electricity intensive time of year for that household.

You can then compare the average usage to your ‘actual’ usage from your own electricity bill, and if you decide you want to take some simple steps to make your household more energy efficient, Energy Made Easy can help.

Energy Made Easy is run by the Australian Energy Regulator (AER), which is Australia’s national energy market regulator and an independent statutory authority. The Commonwealth funds the AER through the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).

Electricity and gas retailers are required by law to provide details of all of their generally available energy offers.

The National Energy Retail Law also provides small energy customers with strong protections including flexible payment options, specific rules for energy marketing and responsibilities for energy retailers to help customers experiencing financial hardship.
