I heard two CSIRO scientists, Rob Cross and Roger Spencer, interviewed on the ABC on 15 July 2009 about sustainable gardening. Here is the link to the interview http://www.abc.net.au/rural/te…..626478.htm.
I also googled their book on sustainable gardens and found this link:

I was looking for information about plants we can plant in our gardens to attract and help sustain local bird species, and found lots of useful information on this and other gardening topics at the Yarralumla Nursery website. Check it out at http://www.tams.act.gov.au/liv…..ree_advice

For anyone interested in reducing water use in the garden, I've recently been building a water wicking bed. They're mainly used for growing food but the idea should work just as well for any plants. The plan is to put a small resevoir below the plants and water them from below rather than pouring water on top of them, aparrently they use about half as much water to produce the same amount of food. I'll be happy to post my results if anyone is interested.
Here is a good link:

Hi Paul,
At a recent SEE-Change meeting at a member's home, we were shown a small water wicking bed in a pot containing very healthy looking plants. It was very interesting and so it would be great if you could post your results.

With summer coming on, and temperatures already exceeding 30 degrees C, it's worth keeping in mind that the ACT Government's Garden Smart service provides a FREE service whereby a qualified horticulturalist visits your garden to assess your watering needs and to show you ways to use less water in the garden.
By participating in the GardenSmart program, you can also be eligible for a rebate of up to $50 when you buy selected water-saving products. For more information, go to the ACT Government’s Think Water website at:

Check out the planned Community Garden conference that will be co-hosted by the University of Canberra and the Canberra Organic Growers Society on 7-8 October 2010 in Canberra.
If you would like to present a paper at the conference, you need to provide an abstract of 300-500 words to the conference organisers by 15 June 2010.

Check out the latest article on climateXchange here about Janet and Andy Russell's Australian native garden that is open on 2-3 October 2010 in Canberra from 10am to 4.30pm (see also the climateXchange calendar here).
They have worked out ways of retaining water in the soil, for example by using swales to stop water run-off on sloping ground.
