More On Green Savvy Sunday in 2011
Markets showcase green alternatives for everyday life
Canberra’s nationally award winning markets, the Old Bus Depot Markets, will
be hosting its environmentally focused theme day, Green Savvy Sunday, on Sunday 9 October 2011. Now in its second
year, this market focuses on green alternatives for everyday life.
“Green Savvy Sunday
will be even bigger and better in 2011 with participants showcasing ways we can
all get a little greener including recycling, upcycling and products made using low energy or organic
techniques, “said
Old Bus Depot Markets co-owner, Diane Hinds.
“We can all gain
from leading more sustainable lifestyles and it’s with this in mind that our
market will share green information, advice on solar technology, organic food
production and lots more,” she continued.
Green Savvy Sunday stalls will feature green products and displays to
inspire and entice. Experts will give advice on green products and services,
and Government
departments will also be on hand to assist with advice on programs they are
running to help improve our carbon footprint.
The markets will feature an additional 30 stalls on Green Savvy Sunday
including newcomer EcoViva. This Australian based company combines a love of
style with eco friendly living to create non toxic and non allergenic
reversible indoor and outdoor mats made from 100% recycled plastic. The stylish
designs and bright colours make them great for kids play and picnics.
And on the theme of recycling, another newcomer to the markets, Anthony
Whyte, will showcase his works made from recycled materials. Anthony is a
visual artist who calls himself a hunter gatherer – and whatever he finds he
uses to make striking pieces. Old street signs, number plates and signage are
used to create the original artworks and a range of clocks, the latter are also
made from tea pots, 45 LPs and oil tins – basically anything Anthony finds at
op shops.
For those keen on learning
more about greening your life, the markets will feature an all day speakers
program called Green Savvy Speakers. Keynote speaker, Dr
Richard Denniss, Executive Director of the Australia Institute, will present
his views on why we need a carbon tax, why it won’t destroy the economy and why
the polluters are so afraid. Justin
Ryan, Director of Armada Solar will discuss the future of solar in Canberra
after the Feed In Law, and present a new environmental product that makes houses more energy neutral. David
Hocking from One- Eco will present on sustainability in the garden,
and Nick Mayo will also be sharing information about Canberra’s Sustainable
House.
