I can quote no reliable source, but I do remember hearing sometime that producing lighter/brighter colour on a computer screen up a lot more energy. Because of this google has made an alternative google in black ( blackle.com ) .

It could be an urban myth, but if it does have truth to it, it would be a nice thing to do the good thing for the environment and make this site use less energy by having darker colours.

Good question. I've done a bit of a search and found a Scientific American article that deals with whether white screens or black screens are more energy efficient (see http://www.scientificamerican……n-black-is). It concluded that black screens on CRT monitors save some energy, but that for the newer LCD models, black screens actually use more energy then their white counterparts.

If you are using a flat panel display, then you don't need to change your colours to save energy!

The best thing you can do is:

  1. disable your screen saver (and enable power saving);
  2. enable power saving mode;
  3. use as small a screen as reasonable.

With demands for battery life on mobile phones and laptops, newer technologies are consuming much less power. If you are purchasing a new monitor, you really need to compare them, as power consumption can vary alot (see http://www.pcgameshardware.com…/)

The old colour argument really only applies to CRT monitors (the big old monitors – read more), and even still, the bulk of energy savings can be made in making sure it uses power saving mode and turning it off at the end of the day.  Its hard to justify replacing a CRT with a flat panel, and from what I can find, the return is somewhere between 5-10 years.

Ultimately for computer monitors, if it aint broke don't fix it. Just make sure its powered off when not in use.
