For those who might be interested – concerns expressed by farmers and environmentalists in QLD about the practice of 'fracking' or using hydraulic fracturing in natural gas exploration for 'coal seam gas' and seeking a moratorium as per US.

It looks like the concern about coal seam fracking has spread to other states including NSW, judging from the Four Corners program The Gas Rush on 21 February. While gas is more energy-efficient than coal-fired power, it's a worry if it may lead to contamination of aquifers and the Great Artesian Basin, as suggested in the Four Corners program.

Coincidentally, the Nature and Society Forum is screening a film on coal seam fracking called Gasland at the CSIRO Discovery Centre on 23 February. See the details on the climateXchange calendar here.
