The Canberra 40% by 2020 campaign is gearing up, with a range of local community groups becoming involved.
Here is a link to the new website for the campaign.
Below is the text of a new flyer explaining what the campaign is all about:
This year the ACT Government will decide on a target for CO2 emission reduction for 2020. They are considering cuts between 25% and 40%. Our Government needs our support to go for 40.
Canberra ♥ 40% is a group of community organisations and concerned Canberra residents who believe that the ACT should lead Australia and commit to a cut of at least 40% in our greenhouse gas emissions. Our Government needs to hear from us so they can step forward with this ambitious but achievable target . With our children's climate at stake, anything less than a 40% cut is insufficient.
With the failure of the Copenhagen Conference and the scrapping of Australia's proposed emission trading system, the responsibility for tackling climate change has shifted from the global and the national to the local. With no heavy industry, and active and concerned citizens, Canberra is uniquely placed to tackle the challenge of climate change.
By acting now, Canberra will benefit from developing the skills and expertise that will make us leaders in the clean technology world of the future. Together with communities around the world who are already taking local action, we will be safeguarding not only our future climate but also the local economy and local jobs.
