Six Canberra businesses are receiving grants totalling over $0.5 million to make their buildings more energy and water efficient.

The grants are part of the ACT Government Tune Up Canberra program, which offers dollar-for-dollar funding to office building owners to “tune up” buildings that have more than 500 m2 floor space.

The six buildings are:

• The Schiavello building at 2 Collie Street, Fyshwick
• Nara House on the corner of Constitution Avenue and London Circuit
• 5 Constitution Avenue (including Customs House)
• Allara House on the corner of Constitution Avenue and Allara Street.
• Tourism House at 40 Blackall Street, Barton
• 40 Macquarie Street, Barton.

The ACT Planning and Land Authority (ACTPLA), which manages the program, estimates that, altogether, the buildings undertaking the tune up work will save a total of 1.5 million kWh a year in electricity and almost a 1 million MJ in gas a year.

There is still over a million dollars worth of grant funding available for the remaining two rounds of applications to June 2011.
