The ACT Government has invited community comment on a draft bill that will change the triggers for an Environmental Impact Statement on proposed urban developments.
John Hibberd, the Executive Director of the Conservation Council, wrote a letter to the editor of the Canberra Times on 26 August expressing concern that placing responsibility in the hands of government agencies to determine what is environmentally significant or not is "putting the fox in charge of the hen house."
He went on to say that "This proposed legislation will ensure the developers get the unfettered access to greenfield sites that they want, and with little or no public scrutiny."
Comments on The Planning and Development (Environmental Impact Statements) Amendment Bill 2010 close on 17 September 2010.
