  • Did you know that about 2% of the world's electricity supply is used for computing, including for powering data centres?
  • It is predicted that by 2011, one third of the world's population will be using the internet (up from the current 1 billion).
  • There are currently 1 trillion things connected to the internet.
  • It is estimated that 40-70% of losses in electrical energy now occur because of a lack of "smart" electricity grid systems.
  • In one small business district alone in Los Angeles in the US, cars burned 47,000 gallons of gasoline just looking for parking.

These are some of the interesting statistics mentioned during a presentation in Canberra on 17 November 2009 at NICTA (Australia's ICT research centre of excellence) by Dr Matthias Kaiserswerth, head of IBM Research Strategy in Systems Management and Compliance.
