At his talk at the ANU on 7 February 2012, Jeremy Tager, formerly of Greenpeace, provided some sobering estimates of the future greenhouse gas emissions from the coal industry.

Apparently, Australia is heading towards a quadrupling of coal exports in coming decades.

He indicated that the Galilee Basin in Queensland is estimated to have reserves of 10 billion tonnes of coal, and by 2030 onshore emissions from the Galilee Basin mines will be equivalent to putting an extra 10.5 million cars on the road.
