The Australian Bureau of Statistics recently issued a study that shows Canberrans are amongst the most environmentally aware in Australia. 90% of those surveyed were concerned about environmental problems, the highest proportion in Australia.

81% of adults in the ACT said they were concerned about climate change, and 93% stated that they sort out recyclable from non-recyclable waste. These are also higher percentages than elsewhere in Australia.

50% of ACT residents reported using green or reusable shopping bags, which was roughly similar to the South Australian level of 51%.

The ACT and NSW combined showed the largest fall in water consumption of 32% between 2000-01 and 2004-05.
