I wonder if others feel the same about this, when cycling in Canberra I see lots of broken bottles, squashed plastic containers and aluminium cans on the roads and am forever picking stuff up outside my place to put in the recycling bin rather than see it float down Canberra's huge stormwater drains. Why doesn't the ACT have the kind of progressive, container deposit legislation and practice that South Australia has had for decades and is now extending to trials of vending machines?
I know what you mean. I was amazed last March when collecting rubbish for national Clean Up Australia Day in Canberra to see so many empty bottles and cans in gutters and under trees, and broken glass near bus stops. In a two block area I collected a large green garbage bag of bottles and other junk, which admittedly included a pillow left on the side of the road.
In the Sun Herald newspaper on 4 July, there was an article saying that state environment ministers were meeting this week to discuss proposals for a nationwide container deposit scheme. So hopefully a national approach will be taken to this soon. One can only hope!!
