The National Capital Authority has proposed a new diplomatic estate in Canberra for a range of reasons, mostly posing that there is not enough space for the diplomatic community. One of the sites put forward for the expansion is part of the land abutting Federal Golf Course (other sites around Old Canberra Brick Works and Stirling Ridge) which contains rare and endangered woodland native to the ACT inc. yellow box trees. Red Hill Regenerators has made a strong submission opposing the use of this site, without much joy to date, but others on climate exchange with a commitment to biodiversity and nature parks might be interested in reading this report and commenting to the NCA on their own views.
Hi Quetzal, yes I went onto the website and made comments about the proposals for the new diplomatic estate.
I see from Austender that the NCA has now requested tenders for a consultancy to consider and provide a report on the three sites. Amongst the issues that the consultant will have to cover in the final report is "natural and cultural heritage". The full list of issues to be covered in the report is:
• Natural and cultural heritage,
• financial implications,
• social impacts,
• bushfire hazards,
• land contamination,
• site capacity,
• infrastructure requirements, and
• landscape character
I guess others might take umbrage at this comment, but I'm finding it increasingly irritating that yet another consultancy report has to be commissioned. Whatever happened to some senior official or team within an agency looking at the data collected from publicly available information on all these issues combined with some real public consultations & forming their own damned judgement about whether a proposal meets with the approval of the people who have to live in the vicinity. These people really do know how to spend cash & I hate to sound cynical but it does seem like yet another effort by the ACT Govt to build & develop almost endlessly…
