I have composed a song (attached on this Forum) written as a parent several years ago, suddenly realising that I want to be able to look my children in the eyes in ten years time, if the climate becomes inhospitable, and say I did what I could. I did my best. Songs and poetry are what I do best I have discovered. This song could be re-recorded with harmonies and percussion etc, and I see it as potentially useful in schools to reassure our young people that parents care, and there is hope. I would be happy to go to a school to teach the song.

The song is titled: All that matters is we do our best….. Play Song

The song was recorded by 2XX, accompanied by Jill Parliament (original music by Issac O'Brien) has been aired on local radio, and sung live at a Getup rally raising awareness before Copenhagen. Please feel free to use it, or improve on it, but please let me know.

There seems to be a real movement to use all avenues, including the arts, to create impetus for action on climate change.

Besides the fabulous work of people like Fiona and Chorus of Women, there is also a new Arts Action for Climate group in Canberra.

Arts Action for Climate aims to bring activist and artist communities together to:

  • provide a hub for hybrid activist/artist folk to collaborate;
  • provide artistic support to activist initiatives;
  • initiate arts events with content relevant to climate change;
  • use art to engage the community in thinking and taking action about climate change;
  • help build a diverse and powerful grassroots climate action movement.

After its success in 2009, the Chorus of Women is organising three showings of its great production “Gifts of the Furies” in Canberra on 11, 18 and 25 September 2010.

Its promo says that: “Glenda Cloughley’s big story song about climate change is perhaps the first Australian artwork to recognise the mythic scale of the climate change crisis. In beautiful poetry and music it portrays the predicament of everyone including the artist whose soul is possessed by the fate of the age.”

See details of the event on the climateXchange calendar and to find out more about Chorus of Women, go to their website here.
