The ACT Government is planning to adopt a greenhouse gas emission reduction target for the year 2020. This is to cut our 1990 level emissions, and the window currently discussed is 25%-40%. The ACT is able to achieve a 40% reduction, even more. As climate change continues, it is time for the highest per person emissions city in one of the highest per person emissions nations in the world to make a change.
A collaboration of Canberra climate action groups is launching a community campaign to ensure the ACT makes this change. We believe we live in a lucky city, and that we have the capactiy to reduce our emissions through adopting practical energy, building, transport and other strategies. We could be a model city providing an example to the rest of Australia in how to respond to the climate change threat.
The collaboration of Canberra climate groups will combine efforts to:
a) Ensure that this year, the ACT Government commits to a 40% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions on 1990 levels by 2020, and;
b) engage the opposition, and the wider community to take a positive, active role in changing the ACT’s future by tackling climate change.
We extend an invitation to all Canberrans to get involved, and those further afield to show their support. Keep an eye on us here for upcoming meetings, training dates and our achievements.
