Earth Hour 2012: For the Planet. By the People

It’s time for Earth hour 2012! Become part of this exciting worldwide commitment to ongoing change for the betterment of the one thing that unites us all – our planet. Invite a couple of friends to bring a dish or snacks to someone’s place and register your own event as part of this global initiative at ww.wwf.org.au/earthhour. The theme for Earth Hour this year is ‘Uniting People to Protect the Planet’. As we each sign up we add our voices to hundreds of millions across the globe who have already spoken with their actions.

Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sydney, when 2.2 million individuals and more than 2,000 businesses turned their lights off for one hour to take a stand against climate change. Only a year later and Earth Hour had become a global sustainability movement with more than 50 million people across 35 countries participating.

For the last three years, Canberra has had the highest participation rate of any Australian capital city and we want to repeat that success.  In 2011, 52% of the ACT population participated in Earth Hour. In 2012, we are confident once again that we will achieve the highest participation rate and will illustrate this through official photographs taken on the evening of 31 March to be published in The Canberra Times.

It has also brought about real results.  In 2011, it led to an 8% reduction in the amount of electricity used in Canberra during Earth Hour, and a reduction of 26.93 tonnes in the amount of greenhouse gas emissions. Such profound commitment to action has convinced many local leaders to become involved. Our ACT Government, through the Environment and Sustainable Development Directorate, has thrown their support behind Earth Hour 2012 in the ACT. Their partnership with ActewAGL and The Canberra Times promises to make the event one to trully remember.

If you have any questions about participating in Earth Hour, or would like posters or flyers, please contact Mayumi Smith on 6205 9643 or mayumi.smith@act.gov.au.  A range of information on how you can support the event including logo and poster downloads are also available at ww.wwf.org.au/earthhour.
