Canberra Says “Yes” to Climate Action – World Environment Day

Many thousands of Canberrans turned out on a cold and windy day on 5 June 2011 to participate in a walk supporting strong bipartisan action on climate change, including a carbon price, renewable energy, regeneration of our rural landscape and phasing out of fossil fuels.

Held on World Environment Day, the walk began at Regatta Point and made its way along Commonwealth Avenue Bridge to the lawns in front of Parliament House.

The following speakers highlighted the importance of bipartisan action to address the challenge of climate change:

  • John Hewson (former leader of the Federal Parliamentary Liberal Party)
  • Richard Denniss (Australia Institute)
  • Bishop Pat Power
  • Linsey Cole (Australian Youth Climate Coalition)
  • Lin Hatfield Dodds (Uniting Care)
  • Gosta Lynga (former Swedish member of Parliament), and
  • Phoebe Howe from Canberra Loves 40%.
